One of the most common birth injuries is a brachial plexus and resultant upper extremity injury due to a difficult birth (usually a "shoulder dystocia"). About 0.3 to 2 per 1,000 births result in this injury. The term "brachial" means having to do with the arm, and "plexus" refers to the related nerve network. The "brachial plexus" is a group of nerves which conduct signals controlling the shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, hand and finger muscles. Most often, the injury is caused by severe lateral flexion (extension) of the baby's neck when its shoulder is caught during labor (most often at the pubic bone). Traction (or force) on the brachial plexus may cause several types of nerve injuries, including a relatively mild stretch injury, or injury as severe as an avulsion (a separation) of the nerves from the spinal cord. Some studies have shown that about 5-10% of infants with birth brachial plexus injuries may be permanently disabled. Unfortunately, brachial plexus injuries resulting in Erb's Palsy or Klumpke's Palsy, are sometimes the result of the carelessness, recklessness or preventable mistakes of the delivery doctors, nurses and/or midwives. The Law Offices of Thomas Waitt Pleasant helps children who have been injured at birth.
