Another signal that nursing home abuse and nursing home neglect is likely on the rise in North Carolina and other areas can be found in a USA Today report in December of last year, a report that states that nursing home citations increased 22% from 2000 to 2006. These were not frivolous citations, either: these were citations for "putting patients in 'immediate jeopardy." USA Today concluded this based on records from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which regulates nursing homes that accept Mediare and Medicaid. This report on nursing home abuse does suggest that perhaps it is merely that more nursing home violations are being found, as opposed to incidents of nursing home abuse being on the rise. In any event, an increase in these kinds of claims could be on the rise as a result. In my opinion, this signals the need for families to be vigilant about their loved ones who are in nursing homes, and to get help from a nursing home abuse/neglect lawyer if abuse is suspected.
